Proposed:  Covid Vaccine Access Project

Fund Raiser

Michael Juric talked about last week’s discussion on the upcoming Fund Raiser in April.

He asked Sue Nelson and Diane Brabetz to talk about service to the community. Sue spoke about the Vaccine Access Project and explained the number of senior housing centers, mobile home parks, and homes we have in Windsor.  Diane explained the problems these seniors have trying to make appointments for the vaccine and also getting transportation to the facilities.

It was suggested we created The Covid Access Project to help address these problems.

The project was approved by the members to be included in our Fund Raiser.

Guest Speaker – Gil Sanborn “Aid to the Secretary of The Arm in California” was introduced by JB Leep.

Mr. Sanborn talked about “Russian Information Warfare”.  The information he supplied was enlightening and far more than most of us knew.  Many of us thought he should be interviewed on TV to educate people about what has been going on for years.

Meeting Closed at 8:30

Gil Sanborn stayed on after that to answer questions.

COVID UPDATE

Total Cases:        26,189  (last week 25,141)

New Cases:            Fri    147

                                Sat    167

                                Sun   167

Mon   81                       This is a total for 4 days of 562  (last week was 672)

Deaths:  265     (last week 251)   – seeing a greater number of fatalities in people at home and even younger – this relates to greater widespread transmission

Hospitalized:   78 confirmed and 2 suspected    (last week 92 confirmed and 2 suspected)    What appears different in the number of hospitalized patients with COVID is that less seem to be needing ICU care as we have better treatments.  We continue to see people practice unsafe habits – they travel, they are not consistent with wearing a mask or wear it incorrectly, they enlarge their “bubble” and they are taking vacations.   Numbers are going down so it is really hard to get by in that we need to continue to be vigilant.   Until 85% of our population is vaccinated, we do not have herd immunity and we have several other stronger strains of the virus that has been detected here in the US.

We have tested a Total of 483,449 and 20,761 recovered   (last week 467,113 in our county with 19,197 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (65%  with them only being 27% of the populations and whites are only 27% with them being 63% of the population )

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales (18%),  then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.7%.

Close contact (meaning close family or friend spread) is still a great risk as with household exposure and unknown being high.  We are seeing in our own employees positivity in our      Latinos/Hispanics and being exposed by family members working in other industries or ignoring travel or gathering warnings.

Vaccines were begun….  As of Feb. 1st 48,014, residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 31,382).    Vaccination roll out continues to be slow and nowhere where we hoped they would be by now.    The County and Optum Serve are having difficulties in the scheduling of appointments and allowing the proper category of people to receive the vaccine.   Many people who are not health care workers, nor over 75 were allowed to book and receive a vaccine and thousands had their appointments canceled, rebooked and canceled again.   There is outrage in the community that this is not working and we have stalled giving vaccines.   We were set to roll out vaccinations to the schools so we could plan reopening of the schools.   That was postponed because of this snafu.   In addition, the registration system that is being used now is cumbersome (it took me 25 minutes to do one person and even after practice, it still took 15-20 min and I think I am savvy)    And some of the scheduling sites require a pass code and the individual to register themselves.   So, access to the vaccines has been hindered while this is being fixed.  I have already complained to the vaccination manager at the County and she is aware.

Our Agency has begun the task of completing Federal paper work in order to get approved to help inoculate people in the community and be able to provide to our clients.   I have gotten approval on the first segment of signing up and am working on the second segment.

Remember, outside family members or close friends are not part of your bubble and unless they have been tested and isolated for 10-14 days before being with you and you the same, it can be risky.   And if you see others from outside our county, have them and you quarantine for 10-14 days after.    We cannot be too careful!

Please do not let your guard down; even receiving the vaccine means until we have the majority of our community vaccinated we will need to continue to wash our hands, wear our masks and watch our closeness!  We have now seen a few people testing positive right after receiving their first dose of vaccine.   Remember it does take time for any antibodies to form and only one vaccine only promises about 40% efficacy.   Efficacy is greatly increased with the second dose and we need to strive for “herd immunity”.   This vaccine will not prevent you from getting the virus but it will keep your symptoms to a minimal and hopefully prevent need for hospitalization.   Do not let COVID fatigue get to you and get sloppy in protecting yourself and those that you love.   Let’s really become SONOMA COUNTY STRONG AGAIN and concentrate on taking precautions, sacrificing now  –  stay home, wash your hands, social distance as we can beat this!

Thanks
