David Stankas, a long-time Windsor resident, 1974, & owner of Nor-Cal Maintenance, David loves Windsor and is focused on giving back to the community. Windsor High School Student of the Year

Stephanie Reyes

When Gregory Carroll, an instructor at Windsor Oaks Academy was asked about the most improved student, his first thought was of Stephanie Reyes. Gregory stated he has known Stephanie for two years, that she is an amazing kid, however, showed little progress, that is until COVID, throughout distance learning, she not only improved academically but has assisted her sisters throughout the transition. Stephanie proved to be the Student most improved.

Stephanie was having difficulty with her audio, and a little shy, but we Congratulate Stephanie and wish her continued success in her journey.

District 5130 Virtual Training

Sandie Krutz gave us a briefing on this last weekend’s Rotary District 5130 Virtual Training. Sandie said although different from the past, where members of the District would meet in Ukiah, College of the Redwoods. Friday’s program provided great speakers: Past Director, RI International John Blount, and President-Elect RI International Shekhar Mehta. Our Club President-Elect Pam Moulton & Barbara Spangle gave a presentation on Rotary’s New Areas of Focus, and Director, RI International 2021-2023, Vicki Puliz, spoke on the ability to adapt. Saturday offered options of Breakout sessions of various training, Sandie attended Grant training, and she found it interesting and informative. President Bill attended the session on Promotion.

Our Best Shot” – A Virtual Fundraiser – Saturday, May 8, 2021

Major Fundraiser

The time is NOW, we need everybody on board to achieve a successful Fun, fundraiser. It is true, we are not able to gather 100+ people together to eat, dance, and raise funds, BUT, we can create small “bubbles” to enjoy our event together safely and still raise funds. We have a GEM of a winery from right here in Windsor, Colagrassi Winery that is presenting our VIP Wine Tasting event prior to our fundraiser, perfect opportunity to enjoy a wonderful glass of wine, munch on the goodies provided in the Charcuterie Box with friends, and be ready for Mike McGuire and all the great items available. In addition, a great opportunity to witness all that The Rotary Club of Windsor has contributed to our community.

Remember ONE VIP Wine Tasting Purchas provides you with THREE bottles of Wine and a Charcuterie Box for Two.

This is our opportunity to make sure every senior in Windsor receives their vaccination, as well as supports The Kids Shopping Spree, and other projects that are needed more than ever during this pandemic.

Michael Juric broke us into breakout rooms to brainstorm additional silent and live auction items, and it is no surprise you all came up with some great ones, don’t worry if live or silent, simply submit the form to either Sandie Krutz: sekrutz@aol.com or Chris Landwehr: Landwehr@sonic.net

With this being a virtual event, we need item forms in advance to be included in the event.

Registration is Free but important, REGISTER TODAY!

COVID UPDATE

Total Cases:

  • 29,715  (last week 29,536)

Recovered:

  • 28,996    (last week  28,740)

New Cases:

  • Fri     27
  • Sat     20
  • Sun    17
  • Mon  19
  • This is a total for 4 days of 83  (last week for 4 days was 88) –  the low rates of new cases are very misleading as we are seeing the numbers of people being tested so low.    There is a general feeling that we are getting vaccinated and because our number of cases and deaths has dropped that the pandemic is winding down and that there is no need for testing!

Deaths:

  • 311     (last week 309)
  • The 2 new deaths were in our community, not facilities, and both in ages over 64.  Here is Sonoma County, we have seen over 54% of our deaths coming from SNF’s and the remaining from the community, with 30% in Hispanics, 59% in whites, and 2% in African Americans.

Hospitalized:

  • 14 confirmed and 3 suspected    (last week 12 confirmed and 1 suspected)

We have tested a Total of 641,879 and 28,996   (last week 614,222 in our county with 28,740 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (65%  with them only being 27.3% of the populations and whites are only 28% with them being 62.9% of the population )

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales (18.6%),  then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.2%.

All medical experts are encouraging all of us to continue to get tested even if you have had both of your shots.   It helps to determine new variants and exposure.  In Sonoma County there has been reported Viral Mutations and the most concerning is the  B117 (UK) as it is being traced to young children.   We are also beginning to see “breakthrough” in some people fully vaccinated which is concerning.    People totally vaccinated but testing positive.   Testing is a way of staying ahead of new infections from nonsick individuals or from those of us vaccinated but recently exposed.

The head of the CDC continues to worry about another possible surge that we will see – there are several States that are seeing a 2nd, 3rd and even 4th wave of new infections that are outstripping resources so we are far from being over COVID.   We all need to get this message out and try and decrease the spread of variants and help to make people understand how important getting a vaccine is to the wellbeing, health and staying alive is. are over this.    WE ARE NOT OVER COVID YET AND COULD SEE ANOTHER SURGE IF BEHAVIORS ARE NOT CAREFUL.   Please do your part to hold off a bit longer with social interactions and especially travel.    Stay home – you have no idea what you may be exposed to and bring back to Sonoma County.   Even if you are vaccinated, you could become a carrier.   Until we have herd immunity, we still need to be careful.    Please listen to the health experts – we realize there are great deals out there for travel but our health experts are asking us to wait until end of summer.    Just a bit longer to then keep us all much safer!

Vaccines were begun….  As of April 18th,  400,104  residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 362,234).    Fully vaccinated individuals now at 40% and adults with at least one vaccine dose is now at 20.6%  (last week was 35%  and adults with at least one vaccine dose 20.6%).   Only 19% of Latinos (27% of our population and most at risk for COVID) have been vaccinated, compared to 62% of white, non-Hispanic races vaccinated.   Only 1% of Black/African Americans have been vaccinated.  We continue to have issues with vaccine availability to our County and the ability for citizens to obtain appointments although for the first time, I am seeing appointments for vaccines not being filled up.   Currently, anyone over age 16 is eligible.

There is current concern over whether we will need to have a booster to our either Pfizer or Moderna vaccines that will address the variants that are now being identified in the USA.    Both Pharmaceutical companies are working on this to stay ahead of the mutated versions of this virus.   There is worry about the numbers of US citizens that have begun to travel and could bring back other variants of this virus into our communities.

Please help us to educate others on the risks, the need to really consider getting the vaccine especially in some of the culturally and diverse groups who are still afraid of the vaccine, the need to stay home but venture out slowly with other vaccinated individuals, but curb travel especially internationally.   Variants of this virus are continuing to appear and we need to stay home – another surge of this pandemic will only task our resources and could kill many people.   We want to strive for “herd immunity”.    Please become a believer – the life you save could be someone dear to you!       Treat those you care about with loving consideration!

Thanks

Di
