May Rotarian of the Month: Tom Hassur
- President Bill selected Tom, for his efforts, despite the pandemic restrictions, was successful in completing our scholarship program with 10 recipients.

President Bill announced that John LeCave and his family are all safe; however, the house is in pretty bad shape, fire, water & smoke damage. John & Donna are in a rental home in Windsor, undoubtedly working with their Insurance company and making plans to move forward.
President Bill mentioned Warren Parker, a former Windsor Rotarian and a neighbor of John LeCave, Bill stated Warren came out of his house at the beginning of the house fire and on his return back into the house fell, Bill then said Warren was going in for surgery in the next couple of days and to keep him in our thoughts. I was confused so called Warren, he did take a pretty good spill when seeing the fire and returning into the house to call 911, however, the upcoming surgeries, (one for his eyes), and one to repair his heart’s AFiB, has been postponed until June or July. Warren stated he is feeling good, sends his regards to everyone, and will keep us posted.

Amazon Smile:
- A painless easy was to contribute to the “Windsor Rotary Community Foundation.” Once you have registered with amazon smile and chosen the charity of your choice Amazon does the rest. Last week I purchased spreaders for the Wine Tasting Charcuterie boxes, and made a contribution to the Windsor Rotary Club Foundation with one click!
Sandie Krutz filled in for Fine master Leslie Lewis and took the job seriously:
- Congratulations, no fines for Club Anniversaries:
- Jason Black: 5 years
- Chris Landwehr: 17 years
- Brian Ling: 25 years
- Bill Arnone was recognized for his birthday and is donating $67.00 to Windsor Rotary Club Foundation, although he pointed out that his name was misspelled!
- Pam Moulton was recognized for her birthday which was also wrong, Pam’s birthday is April 5th! She is paying $70.00 toward her fines.
- Wally Krutz was recognized for his Birthday on April 23rd, he is donating $74.00 to Rotary Foundation.
- Tom Boylan celebrated his birthday on May 1st on North Wood Golf Course, the Boylan fivesome included his two sons, his grandson, and his brother. To complete the weekend he golfed Sunday too! Tom missed the VIP wine tasting deadline so he donated $150.00 to our fundraiser.
- Beth Smith is doing a remodel at home and donated $20.00

- Sandie did not want our three new members to feel left out of the recognition process, so she fined them all $10.00 for being new members, Welcome, Mike, Patrick & Dave.
Student of the Year Humanity Core
Daniel Meyers normally would introduce an instructor of the chosen student of the year, however, Mr. Kaufman was not able to attend, but submitted a glowing introduction of Paige Finney. He said there was no question among Paige’s instructors that she be chosen as student of the year. Mr. Kaufman stated Paige shines brightly academically and her community involvement.

Paige Finney Thanked Windsor Rotary and her teachers for the recognition of her achievements, Paige has been active in soccer and Lacrosse for the last 4 years, she shared she believes her athletic involvement has contributed to her growth & development. She got interested in Social Justice and Environmental sustainability during her freshman & sophomore years. She traveled to Latin America and participated in learning projects that included: recycling, community garden & community service. Paige was president of the GSE program, responsible for creating humanitarian projects. A graduate of Cali Calmécac School, Paige is bilingual and attributes Cali with shaping her values and interest in other cultures.
Upon graduation, Paige is planning on attending the JC as a full-time student to prepare her for a 4-year college.

COVID UPDATE
Total Cases:
- 29,897 (last week 29,794)
Recovered:
- 29,323 (last week 29,161)
New Cases:
- Fri 24
- Sat 20
- Sun 10
- Mon 11
This is a total for 4 days of 65 (last week for 4 days was 47) – this is an increase in new cases and is being watched to see if new variants, increase in actual new cases or more testing.
Deaths:
- 312 (last week 312)
Here in Sonoma County, we have seen over 58% of our deaths in whites, 30% in Hispanics, and 2% in African Americans and American Indians. 53% of deaths occurred in SNF’s and the remaining from the community spread.
Hospitalized:
- 10 confirmed and 2 suspected (last week 14 confirmed and 3 suspected)
We have tested a Total of 668,842 and 29,323 (last week 655,741 in our county with 29,161 people recovered)
Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (64% with them only being 27.3% of the populations and whites are only 28% with them being 62.9% of the population )
The largest number of cases is in those unemployed or not working 26% (probably more non-social distancing and large groups exposed by those who are working), healthcare makes up 10.6% and Service and sales have dropped to 2% with home care (my industry) at 2.2%.
We continue to see the last percentages of our community hesitant to get vaccinated. It is reported that there are probably 15% who will not get vaccinated and another 12-15% that are in a “wait and see” mode or so hesitant / on the fence. Medical professionals are now being quoted that we may not ever be able to get to herd immunity and with new variants of the virus being reported that we may always have COVID but be able to prevent deaths and lessen illness, not rid us of it. We continue to see “breakthroughs” in some people fully vaccinated which is concerning. People totally vaccinated but testing positive. Testing is a way of staying ahead of new infections from nonsick individuals or from those of us vaccinated but recently exposed.
We need to continue to identify those people who for reasons of age, medical conditions, isolation, etc need help to obtain an appointment and get their vaccinations. We also need to continue to educate those who we can get to listen to the reasons for vaccination. We all need to get this message out and try and decrease the spread of variants and help to make people understand how important getting a vaccine is to the wellbeing, health, and staying alive is. are over this.
Vaccines were begun…. As of May 2nd, 462,758 residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 430,373). Fully vaccinated individuals now at 48.9% and adults with at least one vaccine dose is now at 17.80% (last week was 44.3% and adults with at least one vaccine dose 19%). Only 20% of Latinos (27% of our population and most at risk for COVID) have been vaccinated, compared to 72% of white, non-Hispanic races vaccinated. Only 1% of Black/African Americans have been vaccinated. Our current issue seems to be getting those that are vaccine hesitant convinced to obtain a vaccine plus our vaccination sites are seeing people not returning for their 2nd dose. J and J has now been re-released for use. Seeing residents seek J and J out for vaccinations will be interesting as people will weigh risk vs. reward. The issue with blood clots is so minimal vs. the reward of “one and done”, but will the public understand that??? Currently, anyone over age 16 is eligible. 33.3% over 16 have not been vaccinated.
Please help us to educate others on the need to get vaccinated. We especially need to look at how we reach the culturally and diverse groups who are still afraid of the vaccine. These unvaccinated part of our population continue to be difficult to get, require real outreach and education on why it is important for our community. The concern right now are the large number of appointments available for vaccine that are going unclaimed and trying to be creative at these vaccination sites to not waste vaccine once a vial is opened. As a Rotarian and fellow community member, help us get our remaining population vaccinated.
Thanks
Di
