Windsor Rotary Club Foundation, Endowment Fund

Background and Report by Ed Turner (treasure)

Past President Carl Wiuff (2000-2001) held office at the time the Club decided to phase out sponsoring the Hot Air Balloon Classic event.  Carl’s goal was to create a signature event with the club and to create financial security to ensure the Club would be able to support community projects into the future.

Drawing on his previous rotary experience with the Rotary Club of San Mateo, Carl made a recommendation to start an endowment fund as part of the Windsor Rotary Community Foundation.  The idea was to create a legacy asset that at some point in the future would generate enough income to fund community service projects.  .  In 2001 the endowment fund was created with $1000.00, original, fondly known as the “Carl & Ed Fund until it was properly named: “The John Lewis Endowment Fund” after the founding father and first President of Rotary club of Windsor, John Lewis.  The plan was to allow the fund to grow to $500,000.00, Allowing the club to then use 50% of its income on community projects.   Over the years club members made contributions and with 2019 being a good year, the fund got very close to reaching the half million mark.  Thanks to a generous contribution from club member Glenn Sugden the goal was achieved in 2019.   Gratefully, Carl was still with us when we achieved this milestone, unfortunately, he passed away shortly after; however, Carl was a Rotary Benefactor and continued his support with $26,966.00 from his Estate.

President Elect Nominee

Past President Pegi Ball was asked if had it to over again, would you want to serve as president and why or why not?

Pegi stated she would serve as President of the club again, she believed, it would provide a different experience than the first time.  Serving as President opened a great opportunity to get to know and bond with all members as well as learn more about Rotary, and strengthen leadership skills.

EVENT Date:  Saturday, April 24th

CHAIR- Michael Juric

Greater Giving software for Online Bidding

Value of virtual fundraiser

Michael introduced Sarah Law, one of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs.  Before she turned 25 she owned her store in Santa Rosa specializing in home furnishings.  She has been the director of resources and marketing for the Healdsburg School, a private K8 in Healdsburg, for 5 years.   Sarah and her husband Chad, a fire captain in SF, are the parents of three sons, Tyler a junior at Windsor High, Jayden, a sophomore at Windsor High, and Paxton a fifth grader at the Healdsburg school.

Sarah has successfully overseen two virtual fundraisers for Healdsburg School using Greater Giving software.

Michael stated we would be having our first virtual fundraiser in April and ask what tips of advice she could offer?

Virtual fundraiser opportunity to expand audience outside of the community, more involvement, no cost to attend event allows more money to spend on auction items.

Interest Sarah said reaching out and asking the community what type of items they would purchase and how much they would be willing to spend.  This gave the organizers the knowledge to obtain items that would sell.

They discovered through their survey that family’s that stated they did not have the budget for fundraising items, may have been planning a snow trip, wine tasting, dining out or other activity would be interested in items that partnered with their plans and would purchase at a fundraiser, such as ski trip, hotel stays, meals. They also ask community and business for auction items, & experiences.  Some in the community purchased items to donate to an auction in order to support.

They started promoting events on social media early.

Theme: create a theme, make it fun, get people excited

Energy: the more volunteers involved in the event the more energy created for the event

Fun:  Interactive, cocktail party, good ice breaker to begin fundraiser, video clips, auctioneer, Demos, keep event lively & engaging   length of event 1.5 hours

Went live two weeks before the event, sent two emails each week the last two weeks before the event to keep the excitement high

Healdsburg School has used Greater Giving Software for 12-13 years, happy with the platform,

Recognized & thanked each bidder by name during the event

Displayed logo’s and promoted contributing business on marketing pieces and auction items.

Michael created four groups for club members to choose where they would like to participate, 100% club participation

  1. Program-Glenn-lead *: Opening event, timing, closing, celebrating what the club has done. What can be done to generate fun?
  2. Gathering items-Wally lead*: What would generate good financial benefit, how to make it happen, who does what?
  3. 3.   Silent and Live Auctions-Carol lead*: How to create & conduct virtual auctions (including the technical aspect of Greater Giving)?
  4. 4.   Promotion-Barbara lead*:    Sponsorships, advertising, and social media presence.

**** Leads are for purpose of this breakout meeting only!

What we did in the Groups

  1. Establish the mission of the group.
  2. Choose a lead for the group. (lead from now until event)
  3. Establish note taker.
  4. Create an action plan and task list.
  5.    The note taker will:
  1. Record names of people in the group.
  2. Take thorough notes from the meeting.
  3. Send all notes to Barbara following the meeting.

If you missed the meeting, pick a group you would like to participate with.                    Michael will be reporting on the outcome of groups next Tuesday,

100% club participation is vital to the success of this event, a great opportunity to connect, have fun, and support the community.

Members got involved in groups, ran over meeting time,

President Bill adjourned the meeting @ 8:40 am, suggesting we all do something Rotarian,

Respectfully submitted,

Pegi Ball

“Here is the latest information from your COVID Nurse!!!

 01/26/21                COVID UPDATE

Total Cases:        25,141  (last week 23,716)

New Cases:            Fri.  102,     Sat. 190,      Sun. 174,      Mon. 206

This is a total for 4 days of 672   (last week was 876)

Deaths:  251     (last week 240)   – seeing a greater number of fatalities in people at home and even younger – this relates to greater widespread transmission

Hospitalized:   92 confirmed and 2 suspected    (last week 101 confirmed and 6 suspected)    What appears different in the number of hospitalized patients with COVID is that less seem to be needing ICU care as we have better treatments.  People continue to travel and leave the area despite our Shelter in Place order and neither quarantine before or after their trips.  Many feel that being outside and taking trips are safe, but Public Health is asking that we stay home, shelter in place despite lifting the lockdown last night.  Governor Newsom did lift the lockdown despite many medical people feeling it is too soon and we could have to turn around and do it again.  Only time and numbers can tell us that.

We have tested a Total of 467,113 and 19,197 recovered   (last week 449,368 in our county with 17,631 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (65% and whites are only 27%

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales (18.6%), then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.7%

Close contact (meaning close family or friend spread) is still a great risk as with household exposure and unknown being high.  We are seeing in our own employees positivity in our Latinos/Hispanics and being exposed by family members working in other industries or ignoring travel or gathering warnings.

Vaccines were begun….  As of Jan. 24th, 31,382 residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 18,701).    Vaccination roll out continues to be slow and nowhere where we hoped they would be by now.    The County is still only offering vaccine to Phase 1 A group only – this is health care personnel and residents of skilled nursing facilities, however, they have entered into a relationship with Optum Serve (who they use for the lab) to be able to provide clinics for Phase 1 B – essential workers and persons over 65.   They have opened a Rohnert Park vaccination clinic and will be able to administer up to 420 doses a day.  They will be offering to those over 75 first and are inviting them through local senior citizen community groups.   If you are in that age group, contact Sonoma County Public Health or go on their website to see about signups for this clinic.     Our Agency has begun the task of completing Federal paper work in order to get approved to help inoculate people in the community and be able to provide to our clients.

Remember, outside family members or close friends are not part of your bubble and unless they have been tested and isolated for 10-14 days before being with you and you the same, it can be risky.   And if you see others from outside our county, have them and you quarantine for 10-14 days after.    We cannot be too careful!

Please do not let your guard down; even receiving the vaccine means until we have the majority of our community vaccinated we will need to continue to wash our hands, wear our masks and watch our closeness!  We have now seen a few people testing positive right after receiving their first dose of vaccine.   Remember it does take time for any antibodies to form and only one vaccine only promises about 40% efficacy.   This vaccine will not prevent you from getting the virus but it will keep your symptoms to a minimal and hopefully prevent need for hospitalization.   Do not let COVID fatigue get to you and get sloppy in protecting yourself and those that you love.   Let’s really become SONOMA COUNTY STRONG AGAIN and concentrate on taking precautions, sacrificing now – stay home, wash your hands, social distance as we can beat this!

The county is excited to announce a new resource for vaccinations beginning this Wednesday for people 75 years old and older.  It has been decided to initially prioritize Latinx or people with disabilities by invitation for the first few days.  After that, it will likely be opened to the general community 75 and older.  OptumServe is the organization and they will administer the vaccine at the Rohnert Park Community Center, 5401 Snyder Lane, RP 94928.  The hours of operation will be on Wednesday: Noon-6pm and Thursday-Sat: 9-6pm.  It is anticipated that they will complete 100 vaccines on Wednesday and 420 each day after.

In order to begin this first phase, individuals can register by accessing the following link:  https://myoptumserve.com/covid19.  Technical supports are also offered by OptumServe.

 Thanks
