2016-10-11 Heather Cullen – Odyssey of the Mind

President John opened the meeting at 7:30 AM with a few empty seats, possibly due to the Giants playing their hearts out into the 13th inning.

The flag salute was led by the most famous Rotarian in the room… What was their name?

Warin Parker would have just talked about the Giants win, so Larry Wasem gave us a few inspirational words about politics… By Groucho Marx

Jim Scally gave us a rousing song of baseball after displaying a conflicted fan flag promoting the Cubs and the Giants.

Introductions of visiting Rotarians gave way to the guests of Rotarians:

Sandie Krutz introduced Doug Lyon, a local Realtor.

Dave Koch introduced his son Dak

Bill Conklin introduced Carol Martin and JB Leep incoming Rotarians

Heather Cullen was introduced by Allen Christensen along with this year’s Windsor Odyssey of the Mind team and a “Driving Dad.”

Jack Hyde introduced the lovely “Jersey Girl,” Janet Hyde and our exchange daughter Ella. Ella went to her homecoming dance and although she had fun, “It wasn’t as exciting as the movies portray it.”

Pres John had his first opportunity to induct new Rotarians. Carol Martin and JB Leep allowed us to shake hands and do our warmest welcome greeting.

Announcements:

Renee Hyde introduced the Rotary Foundation Dinner this Saturday evening October 15th at the Sheraton… Better check the rotary5130.org for details.

Maureen Merrill invited us to participate in the SCARC meeting that our club is hosting.

Members in the news, Glenda Sales and Leslie Lewis were gorgeous, Tom Hassur’s son Brandon got married last weekend. Dick Bishop looks forward to your phone call and you can talk about Maureen’s upcoming Dancing with the Stars performance.

Steve Klik and Maureen just returned from Guadalajara for a whirlwind trip and a cleanup of the Ameca River. This is a Rotary project with worldwide implications. The Ameca is the start of a movement to clean rivers around the globe, including Africa, India and many more. This is our Festival of Brotherhood reborn with more than 40 clubs involved.

Wally Krutz and Jason Black are on to the Red Cross smoke detector installations. We are currently working with them, but the goal is for our club to become an individual entity. They need our help for some early morning gathering of volunteers. They plan to meet on October 22nd at 8 AM, or thereabouts, at the Journey’s End in Santa Rosa on Mendocino. Best to connect with either to get the specifics. If you need training, you will have to go one extra step, but we are told it is fun.

If you would like to see all that is going around in the District, go to rotary5130.org and look for events.

Holiday party is on for December 3, 2016. Be sure to put that on your calendar.

Pres John shared the goals of the year for all members. For the small sum of $34 per month we make all the goals.

We have over $640 waiting for the right helmet… Art Diaz showed he was a Cleveland fan versus the Raiders. The pot thickens!

Program:

Allen Christensen introduced Heather Cullen as a youth oriented leader in Windsor. She shared that Odyssey of the Mind Has 7 teams within the district. Each year we are asked to become hands-on with a demonstration. This competition has sent a local Windsor team to compete with others in the world including China and France.

Heather sent out her team to intimidate the Rotarians in the room by lurking over their creative attempts. It didn’t work. We had some fun and had an opportunity to build not only a project, but friendship.

Neck massager… Tops of mountains can be peaceful and beautiful. Claymation got a start with one table. Another table’s work was meant to be a secret… No one is really talking about this one. MJ Girard and team used the tin foil to create an imaginary ball and a pumpkin maze.

The team wrapped another wonderful experience and headed off to school. Heather also reminded us that she heads a choir that will sing for free. They just need a call to invite them.

We were released early to get some rest after staying up all night watching the Giants and the Cubbies play a heck of a game.
